ASPHALT JESUS

Most of you will remember that on Easter Sunday, 2006, an intrepid band of Jesus-followers from a UCC church in Phoenix left the parking after the last strands of the Hallelujah chorus had faded and started walking to Washington, D.C. They did it because they wanted to make a witness to progressive Christian values that are not those of the Religious Right. They did it because they believe Jesus has been hijacked and because they wanted to spread a different message as they walked across America. ::: more

Martha Circle
'School days' was the theme for the September Martha's Circle. Hostesses Jeanne Garvin, Doris Hare, and Helen Johnson decorated the tables with school supplies and provided brownies and ice cream for dessert following a delicious buffet potluck supper. Later, as a fun activity, attendees drew the secret name of another Circle member and had to draw her portrait. We then took turns trying to guess the identity of each drawing. As you can imagine, as few of us are gifted with artistic talents, the guesses were punctuated with laughter and humorous comments. ::: more

Plymouth Guild Annual Church Bazaar - Saturday, October 27
Several groups of ladies have spent many hours each week since early August cooking up batches of Aunt Bill's Candy to be sold at the Annual Church Bazaar. Making Aunt Bill's Candy is a true team effort requiring 2-3 people for each batch. Because of the labor, time, and expense required, not very many people make it any more. As a result, there is often a crowd waiting at the doors of the church on the morning of the Bazaar, making a mad dash for the candy table to purchase precious pounds of this homemade treat. The candy sales are a big seller, but it certainly isn't the only commodity for sale::: more

Christian Ed
'Life is like a tether ball ...'
by Bob Davis

Hunter, a 5th grader, was standing in his drive way waiting on the school bus one early September morning. Driving past on my way to work, I watched as he seemingly mindlessly batted a tether ball attached to a pole on the east side of the driveway. The ball arced around the pole in an increasingly quicker and smaller circle until it banged sharply against the metal tube in an abrupt halt. I pondered the scene and wondered how this picture resembled life and specifically service in the Christian Ed ministry at Mayflower. ::: more
