Christian Ed Live Is Like A Tetherball ... by Bob Davis
Hunter, a 5th grader, was standing in his drive way waiting on the school bus one early September morning. Driving past on my way to work, I watched as he seemingly mindlessly batted a tether ball attached to a pole on the east side of the driveway. The ball arced around the pole in an increasingly quicker and smaller circle until it banged sharply against the metal tube in an abrupt halt. I pondered the scene and wondered how this picture resembled life and specifically service in the Christian Ed ministry at Mayflower.
The tether ball appeared with only minor input from Hunter to deliberately drift in the same pattern until an eventual and sharp cessation. I thought of the wisdom of setting linear, measurable, and significant goals and challenges as opposed to following a circular pattern of dissipation, twisting to a tighter and definite end. My challenge as a director is to find new goals, challenges and ends for the work of the Education department. Similarly I challenge teachers and students both to seek growth for their personal lives by renewing the value in the work they do and the class in which they participate.
It is the goal of our teachers to create value... sense of meaning and worth, a purpose... in all that we do in education. Our goal for ministry to children is that they feel a true acceptance and appreciation, an experience of belonging in the Sunday classroom and any other activities of this ministry.
