Plymouth Guild Update

Tresa Gouge of the Native American Legal Resource Center presented a lively and informative program on the ceremonial traditions and traditions of the Creek Indians at our October meeting. Tresa was raised a traditional American Indian and is involved with tribal ceremonies and dances. Tresa, dressed in the traditional Creek dress, brought the turtle shells used in their ceremonial dances, and has promised to come back to lead us all in a ceremonial dance. She also invited us to participate in one of their ceremonies and gave us the etiquette to follow for participation. Erma Stewart has the copies for anyone who wishes to attend this traditional ceremony.

Maggie Hayes led us in a devotional that was perfectly tied in with the thoughts generated by our program. Maggie Hayes, Linda Harris, and Vicki Wilcox were hostesses and provided delightful Halloween and fall table decorations and a most delicious brunch for the members.

On October 21st, several members of Plymouth Guild helped with the Mayflower morning worship services -- serving as greeters, ushers, and the People's Devotion. The flowers on the altar were from Plymouth Guild in memory of the members who have so faithfully served and are no longer with us. That evening, eight of the members attended the United Congregational Church in Norman to show their support of this sister church.

Billie Fritch, Fall Bazaar chairman, has finalized plans for the annual BIG event on Saturday, October 27th. The Fall Bazaar is an occasion that brings a lot of pleasure to many people. The Plymouth Guild gives generously of their funds to benevolence and to the needs of our church and this is their only fundraiser. Many of these ladies have served year after year. They are still willing to help, but feel that it is time someone else took over some of the chairmanships. Search in your heart and ask yourself if you can volunteer to chair the candy-making sessions or the Fall Bazaar. If our current volunteers are not gradually replaced, the church will lose a vital support.

Plymouth Guild took care of the hymnals and Bibles when we needed new ones; purchased all new china, silverware, goblets, dinner cloths, and napkins; put six new electric stoves in our kitchen; and purchased the dishwasher and icemaker for our church. Mayflower Church needs Plymouth Guild. But Plymouth Guild needs you as well. If you want to become more involved in meeting the needs of your church, become more involved in Plymouth Guild. Call our current president Erma Stewart (341-6978) and tell her that next year you are willing to serve as chairman of (whichever group you are willing to chair). Or call the incoming president Priscilla Decker (562-4468) and let her know that you will serve next year.

The membership unanimously voted to accept the nominations from the nominating committee for our 2008 officers. Priscilla Decker has graciously accepted the position of president; Debbie Van Dyke accepted vice-president; and Vesta Edward accepted the position of recording secretary. We appreciate these women stepping forward to lead this active, vital group in our church.

The Third Tuesday Lunch Bunch will not resume until January. The 4th Tuesday Mayflower Bridge continues to meet at 10:00 a.m. Bring a sack lunch and $2 for prizes and the benevolence fund.

Hymnals or Bibles can be dedicated to someone you want to honor. Contact Debbie Van Dyk at 946-9912 to have the proper inscription placed in one of these books and to notify the person or family that you are honoring. The $25 cost for each dedication will go to the Plymouth Guild Benevolence Fund.

Hollie Niblett from the Office of Juvenile Affairs will be the featured speaker at our November 13th meeting. Nancy Cross will deliver our Devotional. Hostesses are Lenore Ulrey, Doris Hare, and Nancy Cross. We hope to see many of you from our congregation at our monthly meetings. You are all members.
