think on this

Cambridge University researchers released a report titled 'Well Dressed?,' in which they point out how clothes - and fast clothes (cheap garments that can be used and discarded without a second thought), are a large and worsening source of the carbon emissions that contribute to global warming. One of Britain’s largest retailers, Marks & Spencer, helped pay for the study and are reacting to how their customers, are getting very concerned about environmental issues. The effect on the environment not only comes from how the clothes are produced, but also how they are cared for, i.e., the tendency to throw them into a washing machine and dryer, rather than sponge off stains, etc. The study suggests that more expensive and durable clothing that can be worn for years be purchased, and that consumers air-dry clothes and throw away tumble dryers that require huge amounts of energy. -- NY Times, Jan. 25, 2007
