LIGHTS, ACTION, LENTEN MOVIE SERIES!

During Lent this year, which begins on Ash Wednesday, February 6th, I will continue the Mayflower tradition of offering a study series, but this year we will again do something different. Last year, we gathered under the rubric of This I Believe, the award-winning NPR series that encourages people to write brief essays expressing their core beliefs. We now have a bound collection of those essays in our church library that expresses the core beliefs of many Mayflower members. Take a moment to sit down in our library and read them some time. ::: more

Martha Circle

"And the award goes to (drum roll)....... Vera Hefner!" Yes, this year's recipient of the annual mauve monstrosity went to Vera, much to her chagrin. The one white elephant gift that is dreaded the most, and makes its ugly appearance annually, makes the gift exchange exciting and something to look forward to each January, so mark your calendar to join in the fun next year!

In the meantime, plan on attending the February Martha's Circle, a Valentine's Day party, hosted each year by the sweetheart team of Audrey Dragg and Merry Knowles. ::: more

The WEBBS Group Begins a New Year

The Wednesday Evening Brown Bag Study (WEBBS) Group started its new year with a study of Bishop John Shelby Spong's book Jesus for the Non-Religious. The group meets each Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the library just off the southeast corner of Milligan Hall. In this book, Bishop Spong says, "I seek to sketch the outlines of a new Christology that is true to the Jesus experience while walking away from the traditional Jesus explanations. What emerges is a portrait of a life in which the human opens to the divine, in which the sacred is not isolated from the real, but is an expression of it." ::: more

Plymouth Guild

The women of Plymouth Guild began the new year at their January 8th meeting with installation of officers for 2008, which had been scheduled to take place at the December meeting. Icy, snowy weather forced the cancellation of that event.

Leading the group this year will be Priscilla Decker, president; Debbie Van Dyke, vice-president; Vesta Edwards, recording secretary; Betty Dambold, treasurer; and Erma Stewart, parliamentarian. ::: more

Christian Ed
I Love ... A Teacher Affects Eternity
by Bob Davis

Few of you may recognize the musician Tom T. Hall. Fewer still, the lyrics of the song, I Love. As a result of growing up with parents who loved country music, I recall the following words from this simple song:

"I love little baby ducks, old pick-up trucks, slow-moving trains, and rain.

I love little country streams, sleep without dreams, Sunday school in May,

And hay.

And I love you too."

Funny what things pop back into your brain in the month of February. This valentine month, I am proud to say in simple words that I love teachers. ::: more

WHIZ KIDS UPDATE

Mayflower's Whiz Kids Annual Christmas Feast, scheduled for December 20th, was in jeopardy as Whiz Kids' partner church Crown Heights United Methodist, Putnam Heights Elementary and their neighborhoods were some of the hardest hit by December's ice storm. As so many in the city, our students were without school or power for days following the storm and many of the majestic trees surrounding the church were lost or damaged. ::: more
