The WEBBS Group Begins a New Year
The Wednesday Evening Brown Bag Study (WEBBS) Group started its new year with a study of Bishop John Shelby Spong's book Jesus for the Non-Religious. The group meets each Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the library just off the southeast corner of Milligan Hall. In this book, Bishop Spong says, "I seek to sketch the outlines of a new Christology that is true to the Jesus experience while walking away from the traditional Jesus explanations. What emerges is a portrait of a life in which the human opens to the divine, in which the sacred is not isolated from the real, but is an expression of it."
This adult study group began as a result of a desire on the part of several choir members to have an opportunity for adult Christian education at a time which did not conflict with chancel choir rehearsals. However, the discussions have apparently been stimulating enough that at least half of those who have participated during the last year are not choir members. Nevertheless, each session is limited to one hour so those who are in the choir can attend rehearsals which begin at 7 p.m.
Even though the group began meeting this year on January 23rd with an introductory social gathering and then started its study of the book the following Wednesday, new members are welcome and, indeed, encouraged to join the group because, as Rolan Decker has said, "We find it beneficial to learn from each other's insights and perspectives on the material we are studying. Usually, each person has something unique to contribute to our discussions." Those who are interested in joining the group may contact Decker at wlind1@cox.net or Kay and Don Gilchrist at dgilch@cox.net for further information.
