Whiz Kids coordinates one-on-one tutoring sessions for multiple pairs of volunteers and students at host sites (typically urban churches) throughout the OKC Metro area.

whiz kids celebrate christmas at heartwarming gathering

Whiz Kids celebrated Christmas with a dinner for tutors, students and their families at Crown Heights United Methodist Church in Dec. Following the regular tutoring time, a team from Crown Heights, led by Bill and Phyllis Henry, served a wonderful meal for about 140 people. Tutors provided transportation for families who needed a ride. Pastor Rod Newman gave the welcome and invocation to the group.

Whiz Kids students were gifted with a Christmas bag with a Putnam Heights Whiz Kids hooded sweatshirt, two Charlotte’s Web books, a hygiene kit, and a stocking of candy, and then the Whiz Kids presented tutors with a picture Christmas card. Mayflower’s Bob Bish led Christmas Carols and helped Greg Jorgensen lead the singing of “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” with each table singing a different day. The evening ended with everyone forming a large circle holding hands and singing “Silent Night.” This is an annual event for the WHIZ KIDS program and this year’s program was the best yet in attendance and fellowship.

Mayflower’s Whiz Kids group was able to provide gifts for the students through the generosity of the Mayflower Benevolence Board.

Whiz Kids invites interested members to serve as Whiz Kids volunteers. Whiz Kids has a waiting list of students who would love to have a mentor and friend. Just take a look at the photo gallery from this year's Christmas event -- the wonderful spirit of this vital work is more than evident!
