Christian Ed: Holiday Fear
And they were sore afraid... frightened by the extraordinary appearance, the shepherds minding their flocks, startled village people when wise men arrived by caravan in Bethlehem, the local leader Herod learning of and perceiving the coming king as a threat.
"Perfect love casts out all fear." The baby arriving that evening was to be called the Prince of Peace. Why fear??? The surprise and the unknown of the angels' announcement? The baffling affect of the magi's entourage? The threat Herod perceived to the power and control of his being in charge. Eventually, the religious leaders who will turn from skepticism to hate. Yet, nothing dissipates fear more than the comfort and peace of perfect love.
In adult Sunday school, we have Seven Generations seemingly watching over the environment and its issues as shepherds in the fields. We have the seekers, coming to see the newborn King, who will bring a spiritual reign of justice and hope. We have freethinkers reviewing issues of sanctity, spirituality, and politics. We have the Bible Extreme examining the subjects of Biblical meaning. We have children and youth classes where students are loved and affirmed.
Contemporary Holiday Fear... too much month for the money... not enough time for all the commitments... what will the relatives think? Will the kids be appreciative? Only a few things matter; really only one. A life marked by faith and love, watching and listening to the child in the manger. Mary marveled, do we??? Love like you have never been hurt, and give what is most meaningful... yourself.
Will you make an attempt at loving without fear?
