MY flower power FAQs
What role do the youth play in MY?
Well that's up to each youth. Youth may come to activities all the time, some of the time, or never. Of course never meaning they're not playing a role. Duh. :-)
Youth may apply to serve on the Steering Committee and help plan activities and events. They may go on trips and help with fundraisers. They may make new members feel welcome and invite their friends to activities.
Youth can hang out in the youth room, help fill up the soda tip jar in our very own refrigerator, help out during Sunday School in the little kids classrooms and a host of other church-related activities.
Most of all, at MY flower power -- we encourage each student to ask questions, explore new ideas, and think!
What's my responsibility as a youth in youth group?
To have fun, help, listen, and serve.
We explore a lot of different ideas, cultures, faiths and beliefs, so we encourage you to be courteous, non-judgmental, respectful, tolerant and accepting. We will not always agree with each other and in those cases we can agree to disagree and still be great friends!
I have an idea for a youth group activity or community service project. Is there a process for submitting ideas?
Yes! We welcome your ideas. Please submit them to a youth group steering committee member or youth leader. Then when the steering committee meets your idea will be discussed and the group will decide whether to take it on.
Can I bring a friend?
Yes and we hope you will. Your friends will need to fill out a permission form. Download one here.
Are there any behavior guidelines for youth?
Yes. Our overall stragegy is freedom with limits. We encourage courtesy, respect, tolerance and acceptance of differences. We encourage peace, non-violent conflict resolution, understanding of different viewpoints. We encourage responsiblity for self, helpfulness toward others, respect for people, animals, property, and self-reliance.
I'd like to serve on the Steering Committee and help plan activities. How do I do this?
There are six youth group steering committee members who serve as volunteer representatives for the youth group as a whole. The goal is to have a balance of representation from both mid high and senior high groups. If interested in serving let a youth leader know of your interest. If a position is open you'll be the next to serve. If all positions are filled your name will go on a list until a position opens.
Do you explore mature subject matter in youth group?
Yes. We believe youth group is a wonderfully appropriate and healthy place to explore mature themes together. We encourage a free flow of thoughts, ideas, discussion, and questions. We do consider and evaluate activities for age appropriateness.
We respect each individual and family thoughts on what is appropriate for their youth. For that reason if we plan to explore a mature theme or watch R-rated movies as a group, we give parents and youth advance notice so they may decide whether a particular activity is a good fit for them.
What is my responsiblity as a parent in youth group?
- please be on time to pick up your youth after youth group
- respect your maturing youth
- support her or his involvement in MY flower power
- encourage them to be responsible and self-reliant
- help with activities, events and fundraisers when help is needed
- provide thoughtful feedback and input to youth leaders
- ask for help if you need it
- listen to your youth and help them process their experiences in MY and elsewhere
