We will be reminding parents to pick up their children immediately following services. We will also remind parents that when we have a large number of students in a classroom they need to help us by waiting patiently and not swarming the room all at once.

And just a quick reminder, when class is over for ages first grade and younger, remember to release children to a parent.

Beginning this month, as we do in our twos room and nursery, we will ask parents to sign their children in-and-out of class in the pre-school room.

Thanks for your help in keeping Mayflower’s kids safe!

Text Box: Safety Measures

Giving students a choice is an easy way to encourage cooperation and avoid power struggles. When students make their own choices, they are much more likely to follow through with a pleasant attitude and they’ll also learn important decision-making skills.

For younger kids keep the choices simple: “Pencil or crayons?” for instance. Older students may be offered more choices: “Pencils, crayons, paints, or dobbers?

Choice tips

Be specific. If you ask, “What do you want to do next?” a battle can ensue. Instead offer choices, “Do you want to draw a picture or play with puzzles?”

Use time as a choice. If there is only one possible choice you want your students to make, let them decide about the time or sequence. Say, “Now or in 10 minutes?” or “Do you want to color a picture or listen to a story first?”

Offer a choice if your students won’t choose. Say, “Do you want to choose or shall I choose for you?” If your students get stubborn, you can say, “I see that you want me to choose” and then follow through.
