Education Programs

A major challenge in Nicaragua is providing adequate education for children. At MMO we view this as a critical part of our mission. Nearly all schools in Nicaragua are seriously underfunded and understaffed, but this problem is particularly acute in the poorer rural regions and in schools for the disabiled, where the needs are greater.

MMO's relationship with rural area schools stems in part from our school hearing screening program, part of the Nicaragua Deafness Research Project. This project brought members of the MMO team in close contact with Nicaragua's Director of Education, teachers, and most importantly, the children in the school systems. Specific projects are planned to support the school in El Cua, a small village about three hours north of Jinotega.
