Casa Materna

Casa Materna is a locally administered facility proving healthcare, health education and perinatal care for women in the moutainous Jinotega area. Casa Materna's program is part of a international network of similar facilities.

The prinicipal mission of Casa Materna is to provide care for high-risk women near the end of their pregnancy. Because most of these women live in the surrounding mountains and do not have transportation to the hospital, Casa Materna provides a place for women to stay in Jinotega until they deliver their babies.

In addition, Casa Materna provides perinatal care, including ultrasounds and vitamins, gynecological care and general medical care for women. Casa Materna also provides educational programs and programs for economical development.

Jinotega's Casa Materna is administered by Francisca “Panchita” Espinosa. Panchita and her team have been critical to development of all MMO programs in Jinotega, not only women's programs, but also the Nicaraguan Deafness Research Project and the Otolaryngology/Audiology services.
