Audiology Programs Audiology programs are provided at two sites, the Otolaryngology/Audiology Clinic in Jinotega and the Lenin Fonseca Hospital. MMO has provided complete audiometric facilities at both locations including sound-proof booths and state-of-the-art audiometers. Smaller portable audiometers are also housed at the Jinotega site and at ASNIC in Managua, a non-profit organization for the diagnosis of children with disabilities. William Silias is a full-time audiology technician at the Jinotega clinic and Lenin Fonseca Hospital supports a part-time audiology technician in Managua. A major facet of MMO's audiology program is the rehabilitation of hearing loss in patients from and around Jinotega. Jinotega has a large population of deaf and hearing-impaired individuals who were previously untreated. Through the generous support of hearing aid manufacturers and private donations, MMO has dispensed more than 150 hearing aids and is very involved in the education of hearing-impaired children and their families. Hearing aids and batteries are supplied at minimal cost to patients and each patient is carefully instructed in using and maintaining their hearing aids. |
